My project is entitled 'Raw and Refined', the 'Raw' describes the natural materials used in their natural archaic forms and the 'Refined' are the fabrics and yarns used that have been processed beyond their original forms. The project is the bringing together of the 'new' and the 'old'. Using plant materials to represent the old and the new being photographic dyeing and use of refined fabrics.
The combination of these materials are explored through uses of knit, stitch and dyeing. The knitting features silk with inlaying of banana fibre and a delicate assortment of found natural materials. Stitched work is done upon silk organza, cotton organdie and pineapple and banana fibre using traditional stitch techniques to pattern the fabrics.
My project touches upon the growth and progress of mankind. This can be seen from the cultures that have been explored through their uses of decorative natural materials taken from the land around them to photographic technology seen in the dyeing processes.
The intention of using natural materials and refined fibres is in hopes that people can have a sense of appreciation and interest in how they are made and where they originated from. The delicate and fragile nature of my work hopefully creates both a visual and tactile experience.
